Mixed Emotions Present This Week In Sports..

Boy's Soccer: Last Wednesday after the final whistle blew at the boys game, the field was filled with silence from the players knowing that their dream of going to districts was postponed for once again another year. They played North High at their home field. They started off strong scoring the first goal of the game by junior captain John Soltys off an assist by Matt Curtis. Then the boys let up and gave the game away with a 4-1 loss and walked away with quite a few injuries. Now the boys soccer team is practicing hard to make the best of the rest of their season. Their next game is Tuesday at 3:30 where they will be playing Doherty at Foley Stadium.

Cross Country: This past week the Holy Name Cross - Country Team had a tri-meet at HN with the boys from South and the girls from Notre Dame. HN's boys beat South but the girls did not beat Notre Dame. Thanks to all of those who came out to the meet to cheer us on. This week, cross-country has a meet against North at North High School! Hope to see some people there cheering us on. GO NAPS!
This week was exceptionally good for the Holy Name Cross- Country Team. On Thursday, Oct. 14, The Boy's and Girl's teams faced University Park at their course in Crystal Park. Both the Boy's and Girl's teams won in the meet! This week there is a home meet this Thursday, Oct. 21, against Burncoat. Be sure to come out and support HN XC. GO NAPS!

Golf: The golf team and their district match today, and unfortunately it did not go as well as they had planned. Their dreams of moving on to states were crushed as the harsh weather conditions and the tough course seemed to prohibit the golfers from shooting the low scores we all know are possible. Even the winning team, St. John's, did not play as well as they have in the past. The golf team did, however, finish their season with one of the best records Holy Name golf has ever seen. Best of luck to all the players next year!

Girl's Soccer: Last week, the girls had two games. The first, was only their second home game of the year and it was against Tantasqua. The game ended in a 0-0 tie. On Thursday the girls had a night game at Wachusett. The last time the team played there was when they won the Division 2 District Championship last season. Unfortunately, this game did not have the same results as the District Finals. The girls ended up falling 1-0. Wachusett scored their goal with only a few minutes left in the game. The girls fought hard all game and were disappointed at coming away with the loss. Tonight, the girls faced off against one of the best Division 1 teams in the Central Mass Conference. They traveled to Nashoba Regional High School in hopes of an upset. This was not the outcome, but the girls did have another hard fought game. The score was tied at 0-0
at the end of the first half. In the second half, Nashoba took a 2-0 lead, but the Lady Naps did not give up. Senior Captain, Kelli Breeden, who usually plays sweeper (the last defender on the field) was moved up to the center midfield in hopes of turning the game around. She ended up scoring a goal with only 4 minutes left in the game. Although this did put the girls back in it, they were not able to score again, and in turn fell to Nashoba 2-1. This brings the girl's soccer team's record to 5-5-1. They play North, home at 3:30 on Wednesday, and Doherty home at 3:30 on Friday. As the girls are still fighting to make the tournament, we wish them luck.

Football: This past weekend was Holy Name's Homecoming. At the football game on Saturday, the boys played St. Peter Marian. Although some may say the game was quite sloppy, with multiple turnovers from both teams, Holy Name was able to get the job done and come away with an 18-6 win. This brings their record to 5-1 and they will face North this Saturday at 1pm.
